On 23 August, we remember with gratitude and hope the birth of the Servant of God Francisca Benicia de Oliveira (Sister Clemencia), Daughter of Charity of Saint Vincent de Paul. Born in Redenção, Brazil, in 1896, the eldest of a large family, she knew from a young age how to respond courageously to the divine call, taking on the burden of family responsibility after the death of her mother. Despite the difficulties, she did not give up her vocation and, with the consent of her brothers, she embarked on the religious path among the Daughters of Charity.
Her life was a continuous gift: first in educational and domestic service at the College of the Immaculate Conception, then among the sick and poorest of the poor in Pacoti and Baturité, where she became a tireless beggar for charity to feed, clothe and care for the least among us. Her fragile health did not prevent her from living her ministry of consolation with joy, humility and apostolic fervour. Emblematic remains the episode in which, with very poor means, she saved the life of a dying man by performing emergency surgery in a barracks, a sign of boundless charity that aroused admiration and emotion.
With the founding of the ‘Sant’Antonio’ clinic, Sister Clemencia became a mother to the poor: she welcomed everyone with tears and a smile, sharing the sufferings and hopes of those who knocked on her door. Upon her death on 6 July 1966, the people of Baturité proclaimed unanimously: ‘A saint has died, the mother of the poor, now in heaven she intercedes for us.’
Her witness, recognised by the Church with the opening of the Cause for Beatification, continues to speak to our hearts: an invitation to live the Christian vocation as generous service, to make charity concrete with gestures of love and solidarity. Today, as we celebrate her memory, we renew our prayer that her example may enlighten our path and accompany the missionary work of the Church throughout the world.
Lord Jesus, you kindled in the heart of the Servant of God Sister Clemencia an untiring love for the poor and suffering. Grant that we may follow her example of humility and dedication.
Grant that we too may recognise you in our most fragile brothers and sisters, serving them with compassion and joy.
Sustain the Church in her missionary commitment and grant that the witness of Sister Clemencia may continue to illuminate our journey of faith.
If it is your will, grant your Church the grace to venerate her among your saints.
Amen.
