From Vincentian Missionary to Patriarch: The Legacy of Cardinal Stéphanos II Ghattas (1920–2009)

The story of Cardinal Stéphanos II Ghattas is a living reflection of a tireless shepherd who knew how to unite missionary zeal with ecclesial leadership at the highest level. After entering the Congregation of the Mission in 1952, this priest devoted his best years and energies to the Coptic Catholic Church in Egypt. His deep vocation for service led him to assume ever greater responsibilities, being appointed bishop and later standing out as a great leader of the Synod.

Throughout his pontificate, Cardinal Ghattas was not only a spiritual guide for his people in times of great challenges, but also a key figure in important moments in the history of the universal Church. One of the most memorable and significant episodes of his ministry was the historic privilege of accompanying Pope John Paul II during his prayerful steps on the sacred Mount Sinai in the year 2000, a gesture of profound ecumenical and spiritual significance.

His memory continues to inspire the Vincentian Family and the Church in Egypt. With great joy, we share that the process for his cause of beatification has begun in Alexandria, promoted by His Beatitude Ibrahim Isaac, Patriarch of the Coptic Catholics. Let us pray together that this humble missionary and great Patriarch may soon be raised to the altars. 🙏💙
