Sister Teresa TAMBELLI, FdC

A new Venerable among the Daughters of Charity of Saint Vincent de Paul

On 20 June 2025, Pope Leo XIV authorised the Congregation for the Causes of Saints to promulgate the Decree on the Heroic Virtues of the Servant of God Teresa Tambelli, born Maria Olga. The Servant of God Maria Olga Tambelli, the future Sister Teresa, was born in Revere in the province of Mantua, one of twins, the sixth of seven children of Giulio Tambelli, a lawyer, and Rosa Laina. At the age of 13, she was orphaned by both parents. She completed middle school at the college of the Daughters of the Cross in Parma and, at the age of 18, entered the Daughters of Charity in Turin. After completing her postulancy and novitiate, on 12 September 1904 she was assigned to work at the nursery school in Casale Monferrato. At the age of 23, in 1907, she went to Cagliari, Sardinia, to work at the Marina nursery school, where in 1914 the Blessed Giuseppina Nicoli arrived as superior. She found in the young servant of God a kindred spirit in terms of the requirements of the Vincentian charism and the aspirations to perfection. Dedicated to the school, following the example of Blessed Giuseppina, Sister Teresa worked in the Catholic Action women’s circle, but above all she worked on herself, deepening her spiritual life, seeking to die to herself and serve Jesus in her neighbour. Upon the death of Sister Giuseppina Nicoli on 31 December 1924, she continued her work and succeeded her as superior of the House, not only adapting the School, Nursery and Workshops to the new regulations, but also opening, in 1941, the legally recognised Middle School and Teacher Training College. She organised various forms of aid for the poor and war refugees, always in accordance with the Vincentian spirit, inspired by the motto of St. Vincent de Paul: ‘Caritas Christi urget nos‘. She always had great esteem for priests and encouraged ecclesiastical vocations, providing financial assistance to seminarians and their families. Unfortunately, like Blessed Giuseppina Nicoli, she too was a victim of the unjust decisions of the civil authorities of Cagliari and was removed from her position as director of the Marina Nursery for nine months. At the age of 80, she fell ill with influenza, and on Sunday, 27th February 1964, after attending Holy Mass, she returned to her bed and closed her eyes to this world. On the day of her funeral, many people attended to pay their respects. After the diocesan inquiry, which concluded in Cagliari in 2020, all the documentation was presented to the Congregation for the Causes of Saints. The Postulation compiled a dossier containing all the testimonies, called Positio, and after evaluation by historians, the Congress of Theologians and the ordinary session of Cardinals and Bishops, the decree on heroic virtues was promulgated. Now the Servant of God can be called Venerable.

This is a very delicate moment in the Cause of Beatification, as it is necessary to make the Venerable better known through events and informative material and to ask for her intercession for a particular healing that may serve for her Beatification.
